Questions for Women who have breastfeed and traveled.

I am planning a visit to my family in about two weeks. I am very excited but I am also a little worried about Addie and nursing. We are taking a red-eye flight and will have a lay over in atlanta and then going on to Chattanooga, where I will be visiting my aunt before driving (8 or so hours) with my mom and sister to my parents house. I have done some research and will probably do some more, but any advice or things I should be aware of I would be REALLY grateful!!!!!

Ok, now that I have been facetious, I'll try to be helpful. ;)

Red eye flight might be ok, might be yuck. Will probably be hard for you to recover from, so plan on using your mom to help you get the catch up sleep you'll need the next few days.

Wear clothes that you can easily nurse in without having to disrobe and show everything to everyone. Does she take a bottle or pacifier at all? If not, plan on nursing her while taking off & landing to help equalize the pressure in her ears. (Since she's too young to chew gum.)

If you're driving 8 hours it's very likely that Addie won't be happy the entire time in the car. You then have 2 choices. Stop driving until she's happy again, or take her out of the car seat for a while. I never managed to keep my babies in the carseat for an entire trip between Pocatello and Utah, but I did try to keep them in the carseat when we were driving in areas of heavy traffic. Fortunately they usually got fussy around Tremontan (however it's spelled) or Malad.

You can take a stroller with you up to the gate of the plane and then gate check it, so that you will have it at your layover and not have to carry her the whole time.

Let me know if you have any more questions!

hi maria... I remember with my first baby, I flew all the way across the country, just me and him when he was two months old. I nursed on the flight, no problem. The people sitting around me were very considerate and helpful. I think I remember one lady giving me a mean look when she realized what i was doing. But I just mean looked her right back. :) Would she rather the baby scream?

As for the driving... just stop and nurse when you need to. Literally plan for two hours longer than what the drive will actually take, and don't stress when you need to stop. Find a well lit, well populated place, put your feet up and nurse the baby, then get back on the road.

Good luck! Hope your trip goes well. :)
