One of the most amazing things would have to be the bloom of flowers. One day you wake up and there they are. The trees even burst with buds. One of the most common flowers to NC is the Azalea flowers. It is a bush of colors! There are pink and white and purple and... well there are alot!!!

In Wilmington, where I grew up they even have the Azalea festival. It is quite the event. Southern belles suddenly come back to life. Downtown suddenly burst with people and there is food, events, and games (not to mention azaleas!)

A Common food found in the south is boiled peanuts. They are soooo tasty! Of course you want fresh ones or they will be sour and then not so pleasant.

We commonly would go out to the beach and fly kites. It was a little to cold to get in the water but that rarely stopped a little kid. Many times there would be a dozen people at the spots we went. Sometimes you would get your kite tangled in another persons.

I also miss front porches. I know they have front porches everywhere, but in the south people come out in and sit. Kids will be playing in the front yard while the parents (or bigger kids) will be sitting on the front porch sipping lemonade rocking lazily in their chairs. Any car or person drives by everyone raises their arm in a friendly hello.

Last, but not least. Fireflies. A magically little bug that only comes out for a few short weeks. I remember running around as a kid holding a mason jar trying my darnest to catch these little buggers. Even if I didn't catch one I was able to run around in little lights among the dark night. It always seemed like something out of a fairy tale to me.

Oh, I do love living in the South! I love the azaleas too, but I think my favorites might be the dogwood. And I love fireflies--they are delightful. I didn't know people dressed up for the azalea festival, though!
Great post...I completely agree with you, but I want to add one - I SOOOO miss the crickets and cicadas singing and chirping in the evening. It is a sound that makes me instantly nostalgic :D
love you!!
That was an awesome post. I think me and my mom would fit in well there. My mom owns 4 rocking chairs on her tiny porch but in the summertime everyone in my family goes out there and sometimes we wish there was more. Our neighbors think we are crazy though.
I would love to see the girls dressed up like that...in fact, i would love to be one of those girls!
oh ya! I love the dogwoods and the crickets!!
Holly you would totally fit in that is totally how it is!
I always wanted to dress up as a belle too but I moved before I got the chance. I believe you have to be 16 to 18 and you need a certain gpa. Wilmington did some really cool stuff like that. They even had dances staged in the 40s. People would dress up. I love stuff like that.
Ok, for someone who is already so homesick she can barely stand it; not to mention, devistated by the all the wonderful things that I experienced growing up that my kids are missing out on... Your sweet wonderful post, combined with the "It feels like home to me.." song playing in the back ground was particularly damaging! So, I'm looking at these pictures and reliving my own memories with tears streaming down my face and I just want to say thank you for reminding me of these things. I'm glad you and Steph and Rafi are all close by me now and I'm no longer alone in this.
Oh man... now I am even MORE homesick!!!!
;-)
